Cell Phones
If you visit Russia with a European cell phone, your handset will work (as long as roaming is enabled by your home network) as Russia also uses the GSM network. Visitors with an American cell phone, however, will have to buy a GSM handset and a SIM card. This is a fairly simple process, and you should choose from Russia’s three main networks: MTS, Beeline and Megafon.
There are two types of cell phone number: either a nine digit number (the cheaper option), dialed using the long distance prefix “8” (or “+7” if you’re dialing from abroad), or a local direct seven digit number.
